Dear Colleague on Passage of the Continuing Resolution
Dear Democratic Colleague,
Yesterday, House Democrats were successful in passing a clean Continuing Resolution that addresses the needs of the American people. We can all take pride in having a big, bipartisan vote on this legislation, which, For The Children, adds nearly $8 billion in desperately needed nutrition assistance for hungry schoolchildren and families:
- Renewing the vital, expiring lifeline of Pandemic EBT for a full year and enabling our fellow Americans in the territories to receive this critical nutrition assistance,
- Securing urgently needed assistance for schoolchildren to receive meals despite the coronavirus’s disruption of their usual schedules, whether virtual or in-person, and expanding Pandemic EBT access for young children in child care,
- Extending key flexibility for states to lower administrative requirements on SNAP for families in the middle of this crisis.
For The Seniors, the CR is also a win for our seniors by saving them from an up-to-$50 per month Part B premium hike. For our communities, we included a one-year surface transportation authorization extension. Further, for our farmers, it increases accountability in the Commodity Credit Corporation, which now prevents funds for farmers from being misused for a Big Oil bailout.
Our passage of the CR will avert a catastrophic shutdown in the middle of the ongoing pandemic, wildfires, hurricanes and economic downturn. This CR enables us to continue the essential and urgent work of passing elements of the Heroes Act so that we can save lives and livelihoods and the life of our democracy.
As yesterday’s bill was bipartisan, we hope to similarly reach a bipartisan agreement on coronavirus relief to honor our heroes in state and local government, to fully embrace a strategic plan to crush the virus, and to put money in the pockets of the American people. Since the passage of the Heroes Act four months ago, more needs have emerged for education, small businesses, restaurants, retail and for airlines and others.
Our unity served us well yesterday. Our unity will again serve us well in the ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts. Updates will be ongoing.
Thank you for your leadership For The People.
