Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the following statement celebrating today's publication of the third edition of the Women in Congress book:

'As we celebrate Women's History Month, I am delighted that a third edition of the book, Women in Congress, will soon be delivered to Capitol Hill.  I cannot wait to deliver copies to my grandchildren, especially my only granddaughter, little Madeleine Prowda.

'From Jeannette Rankin of Montana, the first woman elected to Congress, to the 10 new Congresswomen recently elected, women have made our mark in American history as Members of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.  The Women in Congress book will tell the colorful and inspirational stories of the 229 women who have served here from 1917 to 2006.

'Much of the work of the 110th Congress will be done under the leadership of women.  Being the first woman Speaker means I could name four women to be Committee Chairs, and I salute Chairwomen Louise Slaughter, Nydia Velazquez, Juanita Millender-McDonald, and Stephanie Tubbs Jones for their leadership.

'I would like to recognize Congresswoman Lois Capps and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, co-chairs of the Women's Caucus, and Cokie Roberts and her mother Ambassador Lindy Boggs for their promotion of Women in Congress book.

'As we celebrate the achievements of women throughout history this month, we are inspired by the words of Eleanor Roosevelt: 'It's up to the women!'  Let us rededicate ourselves to making progress of our own.'
