Press Release
San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement following the passing of Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo:

“Mario Cuomo was a pillar of strength for his community, his state and our country.  His values, his vision, and his effectiveness for the people of New York were an inspiration around the world.  In word and deed, Governor Cuomo challenged us to make real the American Dream for all who strive to realize it.

"He was a man of principle and eloquence, and all the world saw that manifested in his 'Shining City on a Hill' speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, which has been proclaimed as one of the greatest speeches of all time.  With those soaring words, Governor Cuomo summoned the best of America, and called on us to empower the working people and middle class families that built our nation.  We know Mario Cuomo's language and leadership will echo through the ages, just as vital, just as urgent, just as energizing as his address to the convention that day.

"He was proud to be Governor of New York, but his proudest achievement was his beautiful family, which meant everything to him.  We all know the deep pride he found in his parents and his boundless dedication to his children.  Our country has lost a great leader, but his family has lost a devoted husband to his wife of 60 years, Matilda, a loving father, and a doting grandfather.  My husband Paul and I, and our entire family are heartbroken to learn of his passing, and send our deepest sympathy to Matilda and their children.  May it be a comfort that so many, in every corner of the globe, draw strength from his energy and inspiration from his memory — and I know all of our prayers are with the Cuomo family at this most sad time."
