POLITICO: Pelosi says Obamacare repeal effort is backfiring
During a stop here, Pelosi pointed to recent protests at some GOP lawmakers' town hall meetings and predicted more people will be covered under the law a year from now.
“What the Republicans are doing with their bill, it’s so horrible that it has been a great promoter for the Affordable Care Act,” Pelosi said. “People have said, ‘No way, don’t take away my affordable health care.’ So they have helped us actually.”
Pelosi was in Austin today as part of a tour that's included stops in Los Angeles and New Orleans.
“What we saw now is people organically, spontaneously speaking out,” said Pelosi. “We are on a roll with this.”
Pelosi toured Dell Seton Medical Center’s teaching hospital with Texas Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett and held a press conference with local musicians who discussed how they’ve been helped by the ACA.
Doggett defended consumer protections in the law now that could be scrapped under Republican plans, including a menu of federally mandated health benefits that insurers must provide. He also rebuked the Republican-controlled state legislature’s approach to health care.
“The idea that we would turn that over to the Texas legislature to decide what is essential or not,” said Doggett about the benefits that insurers are now required to cover: “That wouldn’t be a good answer.”
