Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5063, the Stop Settlement Slush Fund Act:

“There are two places money recovered from those who break the law by the Department of Justice (DOJ) should go: to those who suffered damages by the lawbreakers or to the Treasury. Instead, we’ve found out that the DOJ has forced those who lost in court to give money—hundreds of millions of dollars in the past two years alone—to special-interest groups who know important people in government. This is the exact kind of favoritism that the American people are sick of. That money should have been used for the public good. Chairman Goodlatte’s (VA-06) bill will put a stop to these deals and make sure that money is sent to the people who deserve it.”
