Boehner Praises House Passage of Iran Sanctions Bill |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today praised House passage of the Iran Freedom Support Act (H.R. 282):
“The United States expects Iran to be a responsible member of the international community, and this legislation sends a strong message that the President should have the economic and political tools to encourage Iran to meet its legal commitments.

“While Iran has repeatedly asserted its right to nuclear power and technology, its government has remained silent about meeting its international obligations.  Iran must be transparent in meeting its international nuclear obligations and its leaders must cease their sponsorship of terrorist groups and activities. Iran’s refusal to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning critical elements of its nuclear program, and its announcement that it is prepared to begin exporting its nuclear technology raises troubling questions about its true intentions and long-term goals.

“I support President Bush’s efforts to work with the United Nations Security Council to find a political solution to Iran’s irresponsible behavior, and I support a strong, appropriate United Nations Security Council response to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s report due to the Council on Friday.”
