Boehner: Strong Economic Growth More Evidence Republican Policies Are Paying Big Dividends |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement on the announcement by the U.S. Department of Commerce today that the economy grew by 4.8 percent in the first quarter of 2006:
“With our economy growing at a blistering pace and creating millions of new good-paying jobs, it’s clear that Republican pro-growth tax policies continue to pay big dividends for working families.  While we work to strengthen our economy even further, we remain focused on the pocketbook challenges the American people face every day as we work to provide tax relief, affordable health care, and lower energy costs.

“While Democrats continue to reject the flood of strong economic reports, they can’t continue to hide from the good news.  As Republicans work toward a final agreement on extending the 2003 tax cuts, I call upon our Democrat colleagues to join us in allowing working Americans to keep more of their own hard-earned money.  With a thriving economy that is creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs each month, the last thing the American people need right now is a massive tax increase.”
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced that 211,000 jobs were created in March, for a total of more than five million new jobs since May 2003, and more than two million in the last year alone.  In addition, the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent – lower than the average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
