WASHINGTONHouse Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) released the following statement after the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which strengthens the nation’s mental health care system:

“Mental illness is a sickness, not a sin or a crime. We need to upend the way we deal with people who suffer from mental illness. Congress is working to reform our broken mental health system with the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. This is good, bipartisan legislation that helps get people the treatment they need when they need it. I’m proud of Rep. Murphy for his leadership, and I commend the Energy and Commerce Committee for passing this important legislation.”
