WASHINGTON—House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement after marking the start of Hanukkah:
“The story of Hanukkah is one of miracles, resilience, and faith. It teaches us that, even in the darkest of times, we must always seek the light in ourselves and our neighbors. May this Hanukkah bring health and happiness to all those who celebrate.”
Speaker Ryan commemorated the first night of Hanukkah with a menorah lighting at the U.S. Capitol led by Rabbi Heather Borshof. Rabbi Borshof, of Brooklyn, NY, received her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and afterwards commissioned onto active duty in the United States Army and serves as a Jewish Chaplain and Captain. In July 2013, she was assigned to Fort Bragg, NC with the 82nd Sustainment Brigade and deployed to Afghanistan from 2013-2014. From there, she was assigned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and served military service members from all branches. Rabbi Borshof is currently assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Belvoir, VA, and works with Wounded Warriors, while also serving the Jewish community.
