WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement on House passage of H. Res. 639, which authorizes the speaker to file an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case of United States v. Texas, which addresses whether the president’s executive order on immigration violates the Constitution:

“I commend the House for passing this important resolution to defend our Article I powers under the Constitution. The president’s gross abuse of his executive powers, both in regard to immigration and throughout his presidency, has created a fourth branch of government that operates with little to no transparency and undermines Congress, the body closest to the people. If we want democracy to thrive in America, this must be stopped. Now, we can continue this critical fight at the highest court in the land.”
