So you probably didn't see this on the front pages, but last week the House acted on reforms to not only improve our welfare and criminal justice systems, but ensure your taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

This week, Speaker Ryan participated in the Opportunity America #ThisWayUp16 Summit to discuss how a unified Republican government can tackle poverty, grow the economy, and get our country back to work.
Last night, Speaker Ryan appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes for a conversation with Scott Pelley, ranging from what Congress plans to tackle in 2017 to working with President-elect Trump.

There is a better way to fight poverty in America.

Yesterday, Speaker Ryan delivered an address to The Economic Club of New York to discuss #BetterWay—a bold agenda to tackle our country’s biggest challenges.

“Everyone in America deserves a real opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty—once and for all,” said Rep. Byrne. “To do that, we need to combine the present jumble of programs into just a few that can meet people’s needs. . . . It's time for a better way. A better way for poor children. A better way for struggling adults. And, a better way for America.”

Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced that Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL) will deliver the weekly Republican address on Saturday, September 3.

Twenty years ago today, landmark welfare reform was signed into law. And you know what? It was a success. We moved people from welfare to work. In fact, employment for single mothers increased by 15%.

But you know what else? That was just one program. Washington has created dozens more that need a second look. That's exactly what House Republicans are doing with our plan for A Better Way, and it starts with a simple principle: Welfare should be tied to work.

In the 52-second video below, Speaker Ryan explains why.
