Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 4885, the IRS Oversight While Eliminating Spending Act, and H.R. 1206, the No Hires for the Delinquent IRS Act:

“The IRS needs a heavy dose of accountability, and Representatives Jason Smith (MO-08) and David Rouzer (NC-07) have legislation to deliver it.

“Right now the IRS has a slush fund, filled with fees it rakes in from the taxpayers while the taxpayers have no voice over how the money is spent. That’s not how representative government is supposed to work. To put an end to this slush fund, the House voted to have all fees collected by the IRS deposited in the Treasury where they are ultimately controlled by representatives accountable to the people. We also passed a bill to ensure IRS employees actually pay their taxes. Nearly 1,600 IRS employees were delinquent on their taxes in the last decade. It is incomprehensible that we would trust people who don’t even pay their own taxes to collect others’ taxes.

“The IRS must work to regain the trust of the American people. These bills will help by holding the IRS accountable, making our tax system more fair and transparent.”
