Like most Irish-Americans, Speaker Ryan is proud of his family's deep Irish roots, and not too long ago, he and his family visited Ireland so they could see exactly where it all began. In the video above, the speaker describes that trip and explains how his great, great grandparents came to America and settled in a town called Janesville, Wisconsinwhich generations of Ryans continue to call home to this day.

On Thursday, Speaker Ryan will celebrate his Irish heritage by hosting the prime minister of Ireland for the Friends of Ireland luncheon at the Capitol. It is an annual tradition dating back to 1983, when two other great Irish-Americans (President Reagan and Speaker O'Neill) first started it.
