WASHINGTON — Speaker Johnson released the following statement after the House passed H. Res. 1367, establishing the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump.
“Protecting the safety and security of our nation’s leaders is a responsibility that transcends party lines. Today, the House approved the establishment of a bipartisan task force to thoroughly investigate the attempted assassination of Donald Trump,” said Speaker Johnson. “The task force’s mission is clear: to determine what led to the inexcusable security failures, ensure accountability, and make certain no such lapses ever happen again.”
Background on the Task Force:
The Task Force will be empowered with all investigative authority of the House of Representatives, including subpoena authority.
The goal of the Task Force will be threefold:
- To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
- To ensure accountability
- To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again
The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms.
The Task Force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats.###
