“There’s 220 Republican members and 220 different ideas on almost everything… but the one thing everybody agrees on is that we’ve got to accomplish this mission.”
WASHINGTON — Tonight, Speaker Johnson appeared on Newsmax’s The Record with Greta Van Susteren and discussed House Republicans maintaining unity throughout the budget reconciliation process, codifying President Trump’s campaign promises, and Congressional Democrats deliberate fearmongering to the American people about Medicaid.

Watch the full interview here.
On Republican unity:
We have a big, broad, diverse coalition in the House Republican Conference. There’s 220 Republican members and 220 different ideas on almost everything, right? But the one thing everybody agrees on is that we’ve got to accomplish this mission. We have so much of the President’s priorities, the whole America first agenda, wrapped into the one big, beautiful bill, as he likes to call it, and as we’re probably going to wind up naming the final legislation.
It’s everything from securing the border, to restoring American energy dominance, ensuring peace through strength, and making sure we do regulatory reform and cutting red tape. But also, very importantly, is the tax piece. We have to make sure the American people don’t experience the largest tax increase in US history, which is what would happen by default after the end of this year if we failed in this mission. So, everybody here understands the importance of that. Everyone understands they’re not going to get 100% of what they want individually in this bill. This is a consensus building exercise every day as I like to say, and we’re getting there, and I think we’re going to get this thing done.
On codifying President Trump’s agenda:
We’re checking all the boxes he promised. No taxes on overtime, no taxes on Social Security, no taxes on, for example, interest on car loans that are made in America. A number of those things are woven into this bill, and we’ve made all the math work, and we can do that.
What we’ll do to extend the Trump-era tax cuts is going to be critical for the economy. We believe this is going to be jet fuel for the economy. It will also send a very important signal of stability, Greta, to the bond markets and the stock market, to let people know that Congress is on the job. We’re taking care of this. We’re going to revive the American economy, and we’re going to do it in a way that’s fiscally responsible so that we don’t dig further deep in the hole of deficits and debt. That’s a really important principle for us to maintain, and we’re working on it hard here every day.
On Democrats spreading misinformation and fearmongering about Medicaid:
Don’t believe the misreporting and the hype that the Democrats are trying to put out there. Even before the bill text did come out, Greta, they were running ads and putting billboards up around the country suggesting we were cutting Medicaid. It’s simply not true, and we were able to get the ad pulled down because they were based on false information. The bill text was just filed on Monday, yesterday morning, and people are going through that and understanding what we’re actually doing Greta, is securing Medicaid. We’re shoring it up.
We’re going to make sure that these essential programs are there for the people who genuinely need and deserve it. Medicaid is intended, remember, as a safety net for young, pregnant mothers and the elderly and the disabled and vulnerable populations, not for able bodied young men without dependents. Those are the kinds of people we’re taking off the program, the illegal aliens who are on the program. And we’re going to root out fraud, waste and abuse and that’s where the savings are going to be found. So, we’re actually making the program stronger for the Americans who need it.
